Steve Waugh
Born: 2 June 1965, Sydney, Australia
Played For: Somerset, Ireland, Kent, Australia.
Batting Style: Right Hand Bat
Bowling Style: Right Arm Medium
A great captain ensures that the oppostion plays - be it a Test or an ODI - according to HIS plan. And Steve does just that. He is disciplined and motivated. He is also passionate, which has crept into his team-mates. And that is bad news for the others. He led Australia to 16 consecutive Test wins until India stopped them on their tracks (under Ganguly's captaincy).
Mike Brearley
Born: 28 April 1942, Middlesex, England
Major Teams: Middlesex, England.
Batting Style: Right Hand Bat
Bowling Style: Right Arm Medium
Mike Brearley was a master at extracting work (`play` would be the right word) from his players. He had two mavericks to handle - Ian Botham and Bob Willis. And he did his job with aplomb. So much so, both of them turned out to be the best in their business.
He had a deep understanding of his players and their problems, which in turn would help him get the best out of them. Probably, that is why he has an enviable captaincy record - a win percentage of 58.
Ian Chappell
Born: 26 September 1943, Adelaide, Australia
Played for: Lancashire, Australia
Batting Style: Right Hand Bat
Bowling Style: Leg Break
Ian Chappell was an inspiring example. He was forceful both on and off the field. But he was also dynamic, which meant his team-mates looked up to him. He led by example and expected his team to stand shoulder to shoulder at all times.
Both he and his tactics were respected by his team and followed to the T. He was a true example for the fact that until a captain fights from the front, the team would not fight.
Clive Lloyd
Born: 31 August 1944, Georgetown British Guiana
Played For: Lancashire, West Indies.
Batting Style: Left Hand Bat
Bowling Style: Right Arm Medium
One can argue that with players like Viv Richards, Michael Holding and Malcolm Marshall in the team any captain will be able to lead a team to the pinnacle. But seldom do we spare a thought for the fact that with greatness comes eccentricity, and to top it, each of Lloyd's players came from different islands - which would fight among themselves for a spot in the team.
Moreover, however strong the team members are, if the captain is weak, he is not going to lead you anywhere. Clive Lloyd won 14 of the 18 series he captained, losing only two.
Sourav Ganguly
Born: 8 July 1972, Kolkata, Bengal
Played For: Lancashire, India
Batting Style: Left Hand Bat
Bowling Style: Right Arm Medium
He is a wisp of fresh air. Before him, the Indian captains would just sulk and take whatever the opposition threw at their teams, but here we have a captain who would stand up, put his chin up and give it all back (ask Steve Waugh, he knows).
His positive and attacking brand of cricket, has not only instilled the fans` confidence in him but has also resulted in a very confident Indian team. Anything is possible, under his captaincy, for his players know their captain will stick his neck up for them. As of now, he is the most successful Indian odi captain.
