I use to play cricket as a kid and I saw some on TV today and I was wondering why the batsman hit the ground. I use to do it but never questioned why.

To get the feeling and touch before playing your shot! When you hit the pitch it gives you a nice little touch and comfort and also confidence before playing the shot.
