Oberon - Is a man very much at odds with the world and those around him so Andrew Symonds, with all his personal problems and issues, would be able to bring some of his experience to the role.
Titania - A character that displays a lot of proud characteristics and a force to be reckoned with at times (especially when dealing with Oberon) so MS Dhoni.
Puck - Is often thought of as the most important character in the play because of the way he sets up a lot of the action. Is clever and mischievous but also shrewd and quick-witted. He’s also capable of being good hearted while also playing cruel tricks on his opponents. Puck reminds me of Muralitharan.
Theseus - Andrew Flintoff. Like Theseus, Flintoff is heroic, powerful and disciplined (in terms of his cricket, not his past indiscretions with booze and/or a pedalo) but also removed from a lot of the action (as he’s injured a lot of the time).
Hippolyta - A very ordered character so Michael Hussey can play her.
Hermia - At times self-conscious and jealous, a bit like Graeme Smith on occasion. Though, more positively, like Hermia, Smith follows his feelings and imagination and wins out in the end.
Demetrius - A rather obstinate character whose pursuit of something unobtainable throws a lot of things out of balance. Not only that but is seen as someone who has few principles. Reminds me of Harbhajan Singh.
Lysander - Conflicted and not able to show his love due to being bound by rule. My choice is Kevin Pietersen as he is often in some kind of conflict; be it with himself, the media, his team-mates or a cricket board! Also he can’t realise his love for his Jess as much as he would like to because he is bound by his contract to the ECB (so has to leave her at home).
Helena - Lacks confidence and is unsure of herself, especially when others are looking favourably towards her. Is also a vulnerable, sensitive and (slightly) obsessive character but is unlimitedly able to show strength and belief in herself and becomes a confident, happy person. Sounds a bit like the progression of many a cricketer! But my choice is Ross Taylor because he’s gone from a rather timid and nervous cricketer to a player who is able to prove himself under the right circumstances (though still has a lot to do to make himself into a complete package).
Egeus - Stern, strict and often severe (in his attempts to get Hermia to marry Demetrius) as well as being very disapproving of people who don’t do as their told. As Australian captain, Ricky Ponting has all of those characteristics (especially if his team don’t perform). Much like Egeus, Ponting also seems like a person who prefers logic and reason to imagination and whimsy.
Peaseblossom, Cobweb, Moth, Mustarseed (Fairies) - The fairies that have to attend to Bottom so since they’d be attending to Michael Vaughan (playing Bottom) it would be apt if they were to be played by some of his right hand men (from the 2005 Ashes series); Hoggard, Giles, Jones and Harmless.
Quince - Often struggles to make himself heard (as well as struggling with his lines) and is often pushed aside by the more vocal characters and therefore not always noticed as much as he should be. Jacques Kallis can have this role then since his often understated style of play is frequently overlooked in favour of the more showy cricketers.
However, Quince is sometimes more portrayed as a very bookish character with a keen interest in the minute details of the play, and as someone who has a strong temperament. Therefore Stuart MacGill could also play the role (if Kallis isn’t available lol).
Bottom - A foolishly self important character so who else to play him but Michael Vaughan! I found this wonderful quote about Bottom that sums up my choice of Michael Vaughan perfectly: "is totally unaware of his own ridiculousness; his speeches are overdramatic and self-aggrandizing, and he seems to believe that everyone takes him as seriously as he does himself." Vaughan, like Bottom, is totally unaware of what an idiot he really is lol.
Snout - Rahul Dravid, his nickname is “The Wall” after all, and since Snout plays the wall which separates Pyramus' and Thisbe's gardens it’s fitting that Dravid should play him.
Snug - Afraid that it will take too long to remember his lines, and is sometimes seen as a character who worries far to much. A bit like the out of form Brett Lee at the moment, his loud and ferocious roar has been silenced somewhat and it certainly won’t frighten off anyone anymore!
Starveling - Ian Bell, like Starveling he seems to be afraid of everything and is often the source of much amusement.
Philostrate the Master of Revels - In charge of entertainment so you need someone who has within them the capacity to have a good time (and know what makes others able to enjoy themselves etc), Chris Gayle could probably play the part with ease then.
